Welcome to the Ukulele Man of Ross website. My name is Matthew Stead and I am a professional full time ukulele player and teacher based in Ross-On-Wye, England. I offer a range of lessons tailored to your needs, focused at skill levels beginner and intermediate. Whether you have never picked up a ukulele before, or you would like to brush up on your skills I can help.

Unlike many guitar teachers turned ukulele teachers I am an expert in the instrument and can teach to a professional level. I am RGT registered and can tutor you through exams, or just for fun! Fully CRB/DBS checked, I teach children and adults.

I am also a skilled player and can perform at functions, concerts and weddings.

Below you’ll find some of the services I offer.

TEACHING

Individual ukulele lessons in your home or mine. Beginners and intermediate. Lessons can be tailored to your skills level and organised to be convenient for you. I also include music theory and make it easy to understand. This always furthers people’s enjoyment of playing as they know how the music works and what they can do with it.

  • Ukulele exams: I am a fully registered professional RGT Tutor (Registry of Guitar Tutors). I can tutor you and enter you for Ukulele Grades 1 – 5.

Group lessons. Should you and your friends like to spend some fun evenings in a relaxed background learning together I can provide fun sessions and workshops for groups.

School lessons. My lessons are fun, educational and above all, build children’s confidence in themselves and their music. These can be group sessions or individual lessons at your school. I am also available to lead the players in what they have been taught at assemblies and school concerts.

Inset days. I can teach some basics to school staff at inset days to help you spice up your music lessons, or as a great fun team building exercise.

Team building workshops. How about a fun morning out of the office for your team or organisation. A great way to build moral and have fun at the same time.

PLAYING

Concerts and gigs. I specialise in Hawaiian style ukulele and perform sets of Hawaiian language songs, slack key and traditional instrumentals. I can also play both modern and old time songs, as well as classical pieces. I can tailor a performance around what you want, be it a fun night of 50s and 60s golden oldies, some Hawaiian standards, modern pop, classical or a mixture of all of these.

Weddings. I can tailor my playing to your needs to help make your day truly special; whether you would like to walk down the aisle to Somewhere Over the Rainbow, or perhaps have some relaxed background music at your reception, or even a fun performance of old time ukulele songs in the evening.

Update: UPCOMING COURSES:

Ukulele Summer School

For intermediate and advanced students to keep your hand in over the summer. We’ll be working on one technique or song in more depth in the first hour, then the second hour we’ll have a thrash through lots of songs from a songbook for fun!

Anyone is welcome to come along. The cost is £5 per session and you can come along to as many or as few as you like. For more info get in touch.

Wednesdays 6-8pm from 20th July to end of August 2016.

Beginners Ukulele Lessons

This course is an introduction to the playing of the most fun and friendly instrument in the world; the ukulele! Whether you know it from George Formby, Brother Iz’s “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain or modern masters like Jake Shimabukuro, everybody loves the sound of this little instrument.

Now you can be part of the fun ukulele movement yourself. You will get to know the instrument, learn enough chords to be able to play literally thousands of songs, master an assortment of strumming techniques and much more.

The course is fun and relaxed and is mostly practical, with just enough music theory to help you understand how it all works.

You don’t even need your own instrument. Come along and use one of our beginner instruments at no extra cost.

Starts: Thursday 22nd September 2016 (6 – 8pm) for 10 weeks – Cost £50

Advanced Ukulele Course

This is a fun engaging course for those that have completed the Improvers Course. We’ll take what we have learned and apply it in songs and more sophisticated pieces of music to expand your musical repertoire and continue to make your playing even better. New players are welcome but you’ll need to be confident at playing to a higher than average level.

Starts: Wednesday 21st September 2016 (6 – 8pm)  for 10 weeks – Cost £50

  1. Hi Mathew – thanks for a great lesson last night
Is it possible that you could email me the work sheets we used, as I forgot to pick mine up.
I hope I can manage to keep up with the rest of the group. I think I will struggle with the theory🙂

    • Hi Steve,

Thanks. I really enjoyed the lesson. We got much further than I thought we would. I’ll send the sheets over later tonight when I get on my laptop. Don’t worry, you were great last night. People make music theory sound scary sometimes but it’s really simple. Also, even if you don’t understand the theory you’ll still be able to play all the parts as well as anyone else and still enjoy how it all sounds.
      Cheers,
      Matt
